Safiya graduated with a BA in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University in 2008 and also has a Post-graduate Diploma in IP Law from Oxford University. Driven by her interest in cutting edge technologies, she recently gained an LLM in Intellectual Property & Technology law from the University of Berkeley, California, which afforded access to Silicon Valley’s many ideas and emerging technologies.

She qualified first as a barrister and later as a solicitor. She joined the Commercial team at Russells in 2019 and has been advising clients in navigating the IP, commercial and contractual issues arising in the digital media and technology sectors. Safiya particularly enjoys working at the intersection of the creative and technology industries and her practice is developing to include digital platforms, content creators, software developers, tech start-ups and social media influencers.

Prior to joining Russells, Safiya worked at a boutique IP firm in London and in-house at Tesco, where she advised on commercial and IP law, including brand protection and exploitation, franchising, licensing, advertising and regulatory compliance. Her in-house experience has given Safiya a keen understanding of the challenges that clients face and she is experienced at providing advice that is not only legally sound, but also pragmatic and commercially focused.
