Ellen is an experienced solicitor working in Russells’ litigation department. She previously worked in the music industry for over 15 years (at English National Opera, Chandos Records and Opera North) before training and qualifying as a solicitor with Goodman Derrick. She is also a Solicitor-Advocate qualified to represent clients in the higher courts of England and Wales.
Ellen has experience of representing clients from many different sectors of the music, sports and entertainment industries (including TV and record companies, performers, composers, authors, sportsmen and sports clubs) and she advises on a variety of issues facing the creative industries, including:
• Intellectual property rights issues, including copyright and trade mark infringement disputes
• Music rights and licensing
• Contractual disputes
• Sports regulation and disciplinary matters
• Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act issues
She has acted in a number of reported cases, including in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, as well as appearing as an advocate in sports tribunals.
As a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors’ legal service team, Ellen provides legal advice to BASCA’s members.
Alongside being a lawyer, Ellen is a musician and plays the violin with a number of ensembles in and around London. She is a trustee of Orchestras Live, a music charity that brings orchestral music to people in underserved areas.
